Be Free

What if I told you can be set free from your past?

We’ve all done it- made mistakes that we wish we could take back. We have all done things to ourselves that have left wounds on our hearts, minds, and souls. Maybe it was when you were a stupid teenager, or you’re continually making choices that seem to be making war against your life and those around you. Mistakes made from our past, whether from years ago or something that just happened last week, can make an impact on our lives that seems as if it will last forever. Unfortunately, for some of us, we do end up carrying the weight of our baggage until we near the end of our lives. But, what if it doesn’t need to be that way?

In my own short life I have made some stupid decisions, and I thank God that I didn’t make any worse ones than I did. Yet, I can still say I have regrets that I wish I could take back. But do you know what has helped me overcome my past regrets?

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

2 Corinthians 3:17

Giving my life to Jesus Christ meant freedom. I didn’t know exactly what I was signing up for, but as I daily followed Jesus, He was daily setting me free from my past.

My past included guilt, shame, brokenness, hurt, and worthlessness. When I gave my heart to Jesus, He began a healing work in my heart to restore all the pain I was holding onto. He will do that same thing for anyone who chooses to follow Him.

Jesus is the ultimate healer of our wounds. He bore our sin and shame on an old rugged cross for us. He died so we could live- now and for all eternity. What Jesus did was a free gift. No one needs to earn their favor with God. God loves us so much He sent His only Son to die for us so we could have life and have it more abundantly.

Freedom is found in those who put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ. Your past mistakes and sin don’t need to haunt you any longer. If you give your life to Christ, He will make you new.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Allowing God to heal your heart may hurt for a bit. Anyone going through recovery after getting hurt will feel the side effects of pain. Healing will take being open with God and with those He has placed in your life to help you heal. It will take honesty, and laying down your pride in order to find freedom. For some of us, doing those two things can be the most painful thing of all. But I want to implore you- DO NOT let your pride keep you from the freedom you can find. Our pride can be our own worst enemy. Do not be kept locked in the prison of your past mistakes, for Jesus opened that prison and has paid the price to set you free.  It is like sitting in a jail cell, not realizing the gates are wide open for you to leave.

Freedom is available to those who want it. I want to encourage you, choose freedom. It is what your soul truly needs to really live. Don’t just choose to exist, choose to come alive. Choose a new life that can set you free from your past.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

John 8:36
